An Average of 102 People Die Each Day in Car Wrecks

Over the last decade or so cars have become more deadly than ever before – but it’s not just the vehicles that are to blame. Distracted driving – such as from texting while driving – has become a major factor in the rise in the number of car wrecks that take place in the United States today. One report estimates that more than 40,000 people die every year in car wrecks, which is a six percent increase from the previous year. As this statistic shows, car wrecks are unfortunately common in the U.S., and while many are minor fender benders, every year thousands of lives are taken from fatal car wrecks.

Every time we get into a vehicle we are putting ourselves at risk of getting in an accident. And, in many cases, what happens to us while out on the roadways is out of our control. This is why it is so important to be a defensive driver and never fall victim to the many distractions that are out there. Dallas highways are some of the most dangerous in the country, claiming lives on an all too regular basis. In fact, I-35 in Dallas appears on the list of the deadliest highways in Dallas more than any other highway in Texas. Being a diligent, safe, and responsive driver is a must, given all of this information. But it is not always as easy as that. By taking the time to understand what some of the most common causes of car wrecks are, you will be better prepared to navigate the roads as safe as possible.

The Most Common Causes of Car Wrecks

We mentioned distracted driving and texting, but there are quite a few other factors that may result in you getting into a car wreck. Sure, there are laws in place designed to keep drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycle riders safe, but they are not foolproof. When many people think about car wrecks and distracted drivers, they automatically turn their attention to teenagers or the elderly. However, they are not the only culprits. Anyone can make a costly mistake while driving, which is why you should be aware of what some of the most common causes of car wrecks are today:

  • Distracted Driving – Yes, we’ve mentioned this one already, but it is worth reiterating. Distracted driving is the leading cause of car wrecks. When a driver diverts their attention from the road for even a matter of seconds, the results can be absolutely devastating.
  • Speed – We’ve all been there – driving along the highway, going to the speed limit, only to see a car fly past you at an alarming rate. It is not uncommon for drivers to ignore the speed limit and take matters into their own hands. Even going just five mph over the speed limit could be deadly, and many drivers go 20 or even 30 mph over the limit.
  • Drunk Driving – Another common cause of car wrecks is drunk driving, or driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Both alcohol and drugs impair judgement and affect a driver’s ability to focus and function properly when behind the wheel of a car.
  • Reckless Driving – Individuals who do not obey the law and drive without any regard for others on the road not only put themselves in danger but other drivers as well. Reckless drivers often speed, change lanes too quickly, and tailgate – all of which can lead to an accident.
  • Weather – Last but certainly not least, weather is a leading factor in car wrecks, here in Dallas and elsewhere. Drivers often do not take the weather into consideration and drive too fast or make costly mistakes that endanger the lives of them and others.
