On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, our client, Ian Macharia, was injured by a frightened police horse while visiting the State Fair of Texas. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when the horse of a mounted Dallas police officer was startled while patrolling the Big Tex Circle area at the fair.
During the officer’s attempts to regain control, the horse bucked, throwing the officer to the ground. In the commotion, our 17-year-old client was struck and sustained injuries, leading to his hospitalization. It remains unclear whether our client was kicked or stomped, but we’re asking anyone with video of the incident to contact us to shed light on how the events unfolded.
Ian, a Senior at a local high school, is being treated for a TBI (traumatic brain injury), including a large hematoma. Although he is currently recovering at home alongside his family, his mother says he is now suffering from severe headaches and is unable to sleep.
Ian’s mother, Esther Macharia, told WFAA, “It was a moment that changed me, changed my family, and changed my life.”
In a statement to NBC 5, a spokesperson for the State Fair of Texas commented, “The safety of everyone at the State Fair of Texas is our number one priority. We are deeply saddened that a fairgoer and officer were injured today, and we hope they make a full recovery soon.”
At Shamieh Law, we’re dismayed that what should have been a fun family outing turned into a traumatic experience for our client and his family. Beloved community events like the Texas State Fair should offer a safe environment for all attendees.
“We are honored that our law firm was chosen by this family to represent them and we're going to do everything we can to help this young man and get compensation for his injuries. This devastating incident could have been deadly, and we are very grateful it was not.”
