The good news is that the number of fatal car wrecks in the United States has declined over the last decade (by about 10,000), but traffic accidents are still a very serious problem. With more and more drivers texting and talking on their phones while behind the wheel, we expect to see these numbers once again rise. Some states have a much bigger problem with serious car wrecks than others, which is what we are going to discuss today. The most dangerous state in the country for drivers? Wyoming. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are 25.7 deaths for every 100,000 people. The states with the least amount of traffic accidents? Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Wyoming has five times the traffic fatality rate of these two states, which may come as a shock to some.
While Texas isn’t in the top most dangerous states for car wrecks, Dallas is home to one of the deadliest highways in the country because of the undertrained trucking industry. Louisiana comes in 10th on the list with 15.9 deaths per 100,000 people. 51 percent of car wrecks in Louisiana happen on rural roads and only 84 percent of residents admit to using seat belts, which is a common factor in accidents. Texas comes in 16th with 13.1 deaths per 100,000 people, however, the Lone Star State saw the highest number of traffic deaths in 2014 with 3.538.
Texas Highways Remain Deadly
North Dakota, New Mexico, Montana, Mississippi, and aforementioned Wyoming may be the top five most deadly states for car wrecks, but Texas highways are extremely dangerous. Many Texas accidents involve large trucks or 18-wheelers, such as the I-35 crash we discussed back in April. Neighboring Louisiana has a much higher fatality rate than Texas, with 18-wheelers also been the cause of many deadly crashes in Lake Charles and elsewhere. If you have been involved in a car or truck accident in Lake Charles, please do not hesitate to contact Shamieh Law Firm today and schedule a free consultation.
